When we lived in Alaska we enclosed our upper back porch into an aviary.  That was probably the single best thing we did for ourselves and our parrots.  Granted our season was short, but we still had plenty of opportunities to get our parrots outdoors.  The fact that this was a back porch aviary made it even more accessible and convenient.  I just opened the back door and out we went.

I created a document showing photos of how we turned our back porch in Alaska into an aviary for the parrots.

Overall I'm happy living in Minnesota, but if you ask me, the one thing I miss is our aviary.  We will be building another back porch aviary at the new house in Zimmerman.  I will be sure to document the construction and share how we build it on this website and in many blog posts.  Our goal is to build it summer of 2012.  The new aviary will be screened in additon to hardwire and built in such a way that the parrots can't ge to the screen to tear holes in it.

Here is a short video of some of our parrots enjoying the great outdoors.

Buddy loved to swing outdoors and climb on the hanging baskets.

Cageollers

Laura Ford's flock out in their Cajollers.
Bird's greatly benefit from fresh air and sunshine, both physically and mentally.  If you live where you can't have your parrots in an outdoor aviary, the Cageoller, combining a cage and a stroller, is a really creative alternative.  Phoenix Landing volunteer, Bobbie Kerns, invented the Cajoller and shared the idea with us in The Parrot Enrichment Activity Book, Vol. 2, page 20.
