Every year we choose one conservation organization to support, since we believe that it is important for us to help the parrots in the wild in addition to our companion parrots. Our special guest this year is Steve Milpacher, Director of Business Development. Steve will tell us about the efforts of the World Parrot Trust to curb illegal trading, and to rehabilitate and release thousands of trapped African greys back into their native habitats. There are other African species at risk as well, such as Senegal and Cape parrots. Our fundraising efforts this year will be in support of the wild parrots of Africa.
Nearly one-third of all parrot species are threatened. As a leader in parrot conservation and welfare, the World Parrot Trust works with parrot enthusiasts, researchers, local communities and government leaders to facilitate solutions to protect wild parrots. They focus on: conducting and supporting field conservation projects; working to eliminate the international trade in wild caught parrots and; increasing awareness of the plight of parrots, in the wild and in captivity.

| Skills to Empower People to Understand Parrots
("STEP-UP!")
November 11 - 13, 2011
Phoenix Landing Foundation is sponsoring three Friday through Sunday workshops this year designed to give people an abundance of information about parrot care, from behavior and health, to nutrition and enrichment. In addition to lectures, there will be hands-on training sessions, cooking classes, and time to discuss issues of specific importance to you. You will work with the current foster birds at the Phoenix Landing facility, so you can teach behavior, foraging and feeding new foods first hand. Class size limited to 6 people in order to ensure that everyone has the opportunity for plenty of hands-on training. The location for the workshop is The Landing near Asheville, NC; a beautiful destination point in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
